How Long Should Curtains Be?
Curtains can add to the ambiance of any space and offer much needed privacy and protection to you and your home, but often we don’t pay much attention to them until it is time to replace or install them in a new home.
There are a lot of factors that going into picking the right curtains. One of the biggest is choosing the correct length. Too short or too tall and the curtains won’t look right and won’t be able to do their job correctly, namely offering protection from the sun and providing much needed privacy.
So, how long should curtains be? Here is what you need to know.
Interior design experts recommend that you should go with floor-length curtains in most rooms like the living room, bedrooms and family room unless there is something obstructing it like a radiator or a deep windowsill.
Most ready-made panels come in lengths ranging between 63 to 144 inches. Of course, you can also have custom curtains made to ensure that they fit perfectly. When measuring the window, make sure you measure from the floor to where you will hang the rod. The rule of thumb is for the curtain to just touch the floor or for it to hang just about a half an inch off of the floor.
Keep in mind that there will be rooms in your house where the floor-length curtains won’t be appropriate like the kitchen or bathroom. For these rooms, just aim to have the curtains fall to just about an inch above or below the windowsill instead.
The most popular look in curtain length right now is actually a little bit longer than what we normally would consider floor length. For a little more flair, you can instead have the curtains extend another one to three inches so they pool gracefully onto the floor. These curtain lengths will need more maintenance, especially in heavy traffic rooms.
Do you have high ceilings? Accentuate them by going with floor-to-ceiling curtains. Just place the curtain rods higher, closer to the ceiling and have the curtains drape down all the way to the floor for an elegant look.
How to measure fabric for curtains
The rule of thumb is to hang the curtains at least six inches above the top of the window frame to make the room seem taller and then add inches to the bottom if you are going for the longer look. For more fullness, you should also add about four to eight inches to the width on both sides. These extra inches will also make it easier to block out the sun and gain more privacy.
How long should your curtains be?
Remember that ultimately, there is no “right” length or set curtain length rules. There are a lot of factors that go into what would be the right length for any particular room. This includes:
- Your sense of style
- Your vision for the overall look of the room
- The size of the window
- Any existing impediments like sills and radiators
- Existence of children or pets
- Your budget
