Guide on How to Hang Curtains

how to hang curtains

Have you been wanting new curtains for a while, but have been putting it off because of all the stress involved? There are different ways to hang curtains, but don’t worry. We are here to help with our guide on how to hang curtains. Everything you need to know is right here.

Hanging Curtain Rods

The first thing you need to do when hanging curtains is to install the curtain rod. In general, curtain rods are mounted about 4 to 6 inches above the window frame. If you want the window to appear taller though, you can install the rod higher up, from about 8 inches above the window frame to as high as the ceiling.

The placement of the curtain rod can also affect how much light comes in through the window. For the most optimum light exposure when the curtains are open, the curtain rod should extend a minimum of 3 inches beyond the window frame on each side. To give your window a grander appearance, then extend the rod even further, about between 3 to 6 inches on each side.

Measuring the Length of Curtains

Interior design experts recommend that you should go with floor-length curtains in most rooms like the living room, bedrooms and family room unless there is something obstructing it like a radiator or a deep windowsill.

Most ready-made panels come in lengths ranging between 63 to 144 inches. Of course, you can also have custom curtains made to ensure that they fit perfectly. When measuring the window, make sure you measure from the floor to where you will hang the rod.

The rule of thumb is for the curtain to just touch the floor or for it to hang just about a half an inch off the floor.
Keep in mind that there will be rooms in your house where the floor-length curtains won’t be appropriate like the kitchen or bathroom. For these rooms, just aim to have the curtains fall to just a half inch above the windowsill instead.

The most popular look in curtain length right now is actually a little bit longer than what we normally would consider floor length. For a little more flair, you can instead have the curtains extend another one to three inches so they pool gracefully onto the floor. These curtains will need more maintenance though especially in heavy traffic rooms.

Do you have high ceilings? Accentuate them by going with floor-to-ceiling curtains. Just place the curtain rods higher, closer to the ceiling and have the curtains drape down all the way to the floor for an elegant look.

How to Measure the Width of Curtains

Besides the length of your curtains, determining how wide they should be is another big factor when purchasing curtains for your home. You want your curtains to be able to offer you and your home the right amount of privacy and protection from the sun so you want to measure as exact as possible.

How wide should curtains be? To make sure your curtains look full when drawn closed, interior design experts recommend that the curtain panels have a combined width that are 2 to 2 ½ times the width of the window. If you have chosen pleated curtain panel, however, they are already pretty full so just measuring the width of the window should be enough.

One caveat: If you just want the curtains to frame the window and don’t plan on shutting them, then you just have to have a combined width of 1 ½ times the width of the window instead. It is important to keep all your curtain hanging options in mind when making decisions.

Tools You Will Need

When you are ready to hang the curtains these are all the tools and supplies you will need: a curtain rod with brackets, screws, tape measure, level, and screwdriver.

Steps for How to Hang Curtains

  • Install the curtain brackets first making sure that they extend past the depth of your window molding; otherwise, the curtains won’t hang right.
  • Make sure the sides are even using a level.
  • Next place curtains on the rod and hang the curtains.

Other Tips for Hanging Curtains

One mistake to avoid when hanging curtains is to make sure that they are not hung too low. In general, aim to install the curtain rod just below the ceiling or the crown molding if you have it. Be sure to do all the measurements before selecting the curtains so there is less of a chance for error.

Also keep in mind that a lot of this process comes down to what looks best in your mind’s eye. For example, when you have large windows, you might prefer mounting the curtains on the inside the of window, while other times they look better concealed in the ceiling. That is why having expert guidance can really make a difference.

Why Choose Custom Curtains?

While custom drapery and curtains can be on the more expensive side, it can be worth the extra cost when you go to the right place.

Probably what people enjoy the most about custom curtains is that you won’t have to worry about the same exact curtains showing up in all your friends’ homes like you would with mass produced pieces.

The bottom line is that curtains can really transform a room if chosen correctly. The color fabric, length and lining of the curtains all play an important role. Choosing to get your curtains custom-made instead of buying them off the shelf can also ensure that you are getting quality curtains with the right measurements.

When you go to a professional custom curtain company, you are in good hands. They will guide you through the whole ordering process. They will show you the best way to measure the width and length of the window to get the most accurate measurements possible.
